This is the story of Nanhi kali M.Nagalakshmi from Kootur in Kelamangalam mandal.. She studies in 3rd standard in Kottur primary school. Her father Murugesh works as a coolie and the family survives on a meager wage. She is the first child in their family with a younger brother of age 5 years.
Nagalakshmi is a physically challenged girl with a problem in her right hand and right leg. This has led to poor attendance and poor participation in the class as she is low on confidence and self-esteem.
Ever since she was taken in by the Nanhi Kali programme, she started becoming regular to school. The Academic Support Centre encouraged her to participate and open up. The grouping system in the Academic Support Centre worked wonders for her. Special credit goes to the Nanhi Kali tutor Mrs Deepa who took special care and gently encouraged and coaxed Nagalakshmi to come out of her cocoon by providing tremendous moral encouragement. Remarkable improvement was seen in basic class discipline of sitting in the class room, listening to the teacher, reading and writing, which was very poor before.
Nagalakshmi’s mother Pushpa is very happy that her daughter was taken in as a Nanhi Kali, as the programme helped her daughter incomparably in academics as well as economically and helped her to mingle with other children. Now she is much better in terms of social behavior, and level of reading and studies. Such a marked improvement in her timid little girl made her very thankful to the Nanhi kali Programme and the Nanhi kali tutor.
