Boya Indu is a class V Nanhi Kali from UPS Mellacheruvu of Gadwal Mandal, Mahabubnagar. Her parents Mr. Boya Rama Krishna and Mrs. B Sujatha are both daily wage labourers. She has an older brother Chandra Shekhar who is currently in class X from Government Boys High School, Gadwal.
When Indu was a year and a half old, her parents noticed that she was affected by polio, even though they had taken their daughter for all the required polio dosages. They consulted a doctor from the local hospital who advised them to seek treatment from a better hospital in Hyderabad. After the treatment in Hyderabad, Indu was provided with a pair of artificial shoes which helped her to walk on her own with little trouble balancing, which upon practice would have helped her to walk without any support eventually. However, a bicycle accident increased her fear of falling and she lost all confidence to walk on her own.
Her parents have always been particular about their children’s education, and therefore, they enrolled her into a school even though she could not walk. Her father drops her to school every day, and tutor Mr. Rajagopala Naidu from the Academic Support Centre took the responsibility of dropping her back home in the evening. Indu has always been interested in learning, therefore, even though she can’t walk, she has managed to maintain an attendance level of 92% in school and around 88% in the Academic Support Centre. She even managed to score first division marks the Annual Examination of 2014-15. Her teachers have noticed that she has high competency level and is especially interested in Mathematics. Her level of commitment and interest has made her the group leader in her class and she has shown active participation to do justice to her role.
Her parents, who have given high priority to education in their children’s lives, are grateful to Nanhi Kali project for the additional support and strength that it has provided their daughter. They will continue to support her in every way they can until she is capable of settling down on her own.
