This is the story of Nanhi Kali Ruby from Chindadripet in Egmore Mandal in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She studies in VIII standard in Dhanakoti middle school in Saidapet. Born to Mrs. Rani and Mr. Rajan, Ruby is the eldest child in their family. Her father works as a Coolie. She has two siblings – a younger sister studying in VI standard and a younger brother in IV standard. Ruby has battled the problem of mental illness from a very young age and this has caused reading disability. Ruby finds is difficult to sit and focus on reading which led to irregular attendance in school. Ruby however has not let these challenges come in the way of her exuberant spirit and she remains a very playful child.
The academic support center in her school was started by the Nanhi Kali team in September 2010 and Ruby has been regularly attending the same. The Nanhi Kali tutor Uma Mageshwari pays special attention to Ruby and has been a great source of strength and support to the child. This constant care and attention has helped improve Ruby’s discipline of sitting in the class room as well as her listening, reading and writing skills. Ruby’s attendance in school has also now steadily increased with her academic attendance in 2014-15 going up to an impressive 90%.
Ruby’s mother is happy with the financial and academic support Ruby has received from the Nanhi Kali program. More importantly, her mother is particularly thankful for Nanhi Kali’s intervention that has helped Ruby lead a normal childhood by mingling freely with other children. We wish Ruby a happy carefree childhood and a successful life ahead.
