Ragini Sahu has been successful in creating milestones for herself. This has been possible for her determination and perseverance. Hailing from a tribal dominated rural habitation of Charama block in North Bastar, Kanker district of Chhattisgarh, Ragini has proved that no barrier can block the way to success if one is determined and consistent in efforts. This is how Ragini became the topper of the Nanhi Kalis in Class X board examinations securing 93% marks.
Ragini hails from the village Kharatha of Charama block in the district of North Bastar-Kanker. Around 50% of the population of the village belongs to schedule tribe, the total population being around 1500 and the literacy rate of the village is 68%. She stays in a joint family. She has one brother and one sister. Ragini’s father, Mr. Manohar Sahu is a farmer and mother Mrs. Maniya Sahu is a housewife. The annual income of the family is not more than 60,000. With this meager income, the parents put their sweat and blood to educate their kids.
Ragini was taken as a Nanhi Kali in the year 2007 when she was scholar in class-II. With the inputs she received through the academic support center, she started improving her performance and secured 94% marks in class-V annual examination and found a place in the district merit list in rank-3.Her success was recognized by the Nanhi Kali programme and she was felicitated with a bicycle, medal and certificate. Since then Ragini has never looked back. Getting encouragement from Nanhi Kali team, parents and teachers she continued her efforts which brought her success in class-VIII annual examination with 90% marks and got the crown of class topper and studied in Bhuigaon High School. One more milestone was waiting for her – the Class X board examination in which she topped among the 487 Nanhi Kalis in North Bastar – Kanker district.
Ragini belongs to a society where people are not completely free from superstitions and traditional practices. Child marriage is still prevalent in the society (Nanhi Kali team prevented one child marriage in the village last year where Ragini studied her high school). Girl child education is yet to receive complete solidarity from the community and society. Amidst these barriers and obstacles Ragini dreams of becoming a doctor in future. Her parents, teachers and well-wishers want Ragini to rise to the height and create more and more milestones like the ones she has already created. Team Nanhi Kali is all set to provide her appropriate guidance and support in getting ahead.
