Anchal Chandrashekhar Mandal aspires to change the course of her story
Anchal Chandrashekhar Mandal is one of the brightest girls in her class, she can promptly recite poems in Hindi, Marathi and English with confidence and ease. This little star has an astounding class report and makes her parents believe in the possibilities of her bright future. However, this wasn’t her story a few years ago.
Anchal’s father earned a mere Rs. 5000/- a month and it was impossible to sustain the livelihood of his family and educate his three children, two girls and one boy. They lived in one of the busiest slums in Borivali in Mumbai, where they had to deal with the constant fear of their house being broken down. Anchal’s father has only completed his 9th grade, and her mother was never given a chance at education.
Understanding the setbacks of being uneducated, Anchal’s parents were determined to educate their children. On hearing about Project Nanhi Kali, her mother immediately enrolled the two girls into the programme, when Anchal was in in Std 2.
Starting as an average student the after school free tuitions at the academic support centre has helped Anchal earn an A grade in all her subjects. She excels in Language studies particularly. Anchal’s parents are delighted with her progress at school and the school supplies kit has helped reduce their financial woes. Anchal is passionate about her extracurricular activities too and participates in Kabbadi, Hockey, Dramatics and Drawing during her free time. Her bright mind and dedicated concentration helps her learn her course material faster than her peers. The only disappointment her father voices is that their son cannot be enrolled into the same programme.
Anchal is witness to suffering in her community due to spread of diseases and ailments. She is determined to study to be a doctor and help the poor children of her locality. With Project Nanhi Kali’s help, there is nothing stopping her from fulfilling this dream.
