V.Viyakulamary is the first and only Nanhi Kali who appeared for the Class X Board Examinations from the Chennai Nanhi Kali Project. It is a success story and a moment of pride as she has scored a whopping 80.2% marks. Born as a deaf and dumb child, she scored remarkable marks irrespective of her difficulties.
Born in a poor family with impairment of speech and hearing, Viyakulamary’s parents took care of her and joined her in a training institute for speech and hearing therapy at Bala Vidyalaya in Adayar. After four years of training, she was able to understand communication and used to reply back through writing and gestures. She wears a hearing aid instrument and her family struggles to manage the expense, since it has to be replaced every two years. Her father Mr Visuvasam and mother Violetmary have a vegetable shop and their annual income is within Rs 140000.
Viyakulamary has been a Nanhi Kali for the last five years. She is very regular to school and Academic Support Centre. The Nanhi kali tutor has taken special care in improving her confidence level as well as helped her to overcome her fear on English subject. She is a bright and meritorious student coming from a poor family. She will be happy if anyone can support her to manage the expenses incurred towards the hearing aid instrument which has to be replaced every two years.
Her favourite subject is Mathematics and science. She wants to become a Chartered Accountant.
