Story Of Jyothi

T. Jyothi is a class IV Nanhi Kali from CPS, Tadoor, Mahabubnagar. She lives with her father, Mallesh who is a carpenter, her mother, Radha who is a tailor and her brother who is in class V of CPS, Tadoor. They live in a small mud house and the household is managed by the meagre earnings that her parents manage to bring home.

Jyothi has always had a passion for learning. Even before being enrolled into school, she would sit in her brother’s class and attend regular classes with him. Her enthusiasm impressed the Head Master of the school, who asked her parents to enrol Jyothi from the next academic year. Even though her parents understood the importance of providing education to Jyothi, their constant financial struggle made it impossible for them to register Jyothi for school. But the Head Master did not give up, instead he, along with the Nanhi Kali Community Activist, convinced Jyothi’s parents of her interest in attending school and explained the Nanhi Kali project and its benefits to them. Thereafter her parents gladly enrolled her in the programme in class II and she has been a regular in school ever since.

The Vandemataram Foundation conducted a competition called ‘Meelo Evaru Prathibhavanthulu’ which was open to students from Government as well as Private schools. Jyothi and her brother along with 100 other participants took part in this competition and to everybody’s pleasure; they both secured the first position at the individual level. Jyothi was awarded a sum of Rs. 5000, and her brother, won an opportunity to board a fligh and have an ariel view of Hyderabad city. Jyothi’s parents were overjoyed with their children’s achievement and expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Project Nanhi Kali for all the support they have provided to their daughter. They are now eager to help their children continue their studies and reach greater heights.

A friendly and an intelligent child, Jyothi hopes to become a doctor one day to provide free treatment to all those people who come from economically weaker sections.
