Dear Friend,
The last financial year (2016-17) has been a wonderful year for Project Nanhi Kali. I cannot stress enough, on how valuable the generous support of donors like you has been in helping us to empower over 2,50,000 girls since inception.
Your support has enabled us to educate 1,27,603 girls across remote tribal and rural areas, and even urban slums. A mammoth undertaking made possible thanks to 3640 Community Associates who tutor our Nanhi Kalis for 2 hours every day, 6 days a week for 10 months a year. They do this across 4293 Academic Support Centres, housed in 1858 government schools and 780 community spaces across 11 states in India. Over and above this our Community Associates and Nanhi Kali Coordinators invest time with the parents of our Nanhi Kalis and members of the community.
Recognising that girls are the most vulnerable during their adolescence, we set up Nanhi Kali Adolescent Centres to provide them mentorship and nurture them through their most critical age of 16 to 21 years. Currently in Araku, Chakan, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Krishnagiri, Mumbai, Sheopur and Vizag, 3148 girls are already attending 84 safe, community accepted centres. Here they have access to classes for spoken English, computers, financial literacy and are also given counselling in health, nutritional awareness along with physical fitness and career guidance.
Other developments include taking Project Nanhi Kali to Kolkata and Darjeeling in West Bengal, known for their high incidence of child trafficking, Barabanki and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Moga in Punjab, where child marriages still exists and where prevailing traditional attitudes towards the role of girls and women in society lead to extreme gender inequalities. Here too we are determined to change attitudes and ensure the girls remain in school
till they complete Standard 10.
Needless to say, our quest to put #MillionGirlsInSchool continues and we are certain of achieving this with your unflinching support. Let's reach many more girls like our Nanhi Kali Amruta, who is determined to realise her dreams and Rise for Good.
Know more about her tryst with fate.
I would once again like to thank you for your support and promise to share many more success stories with you soon.
Warm regards,
Sheetal Mehta
